Ingredients
- 3 teaspoons butter, softened
- 4 slices cinnamon-raisin bread
- ½ Granny Smith apple - peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 6 sprigs fresh thyme, leaves removed
Why This Recipe Is So Good
Kitchen Tricks
- Butter the outside of the bread evenly to get a golden, crispy crust.
- Add fresh thyme leaves rather than dried for a brighter flavor.
Step 1
Spread butter on one side of each bread slice. Then, flip the bread so the buttered sides are facing down. On two of the slices, layer the apple slices, Gruyere cheese, and a little sprinkle of thyme. Top them with the remaining bread slices, buttered side up.
Step 2
Heat a large skillet over medium-low heat and carefully place the sandwiches in the pan. Let them cook until the bread is nicely toasted and the cheese starts to melt, about 4 to 5 minutes. Flip the sandwiches gently with a spatula, pressing down lightly to help everything stick together.
Step 3
Continue cooking for another 3 to 4 minutes, keeping an eye on the heat so the bread doesn’t burn before the cheese fully melts. Once golden brown and gooey, transfer the sandwiches to a plate. Slice them in half diagonally and enjoy right away.
